A professional home attendant from Odisha

Home Care for Seniors: What does a professional caregiver do?  Let us use the example of Mathura Bag. Mathura is an effervescent young girl working for home nursing care provider Life Circle at Hyderabad. A native of Odisha, she has been working with Life Circle as a professional caregiver for one and a half years. After completing her training at Shriram New Horizons, Mathura has worked with patients afflicted with numerous conditions. She assists patients with activities of daily living. In addition to that, she offers them mobility assistance, manages their medication, feeds them through Ryle’s tube, etc.

Describing her experiences, she spoke of a senior client who has special toileting needs after undergoing a spinal cord surgery. Helping him maintain his dignity and assisting him to perform toileting tasks is an important part of her job.

Home care training for toileting support

Like Mathura, many caregivers in Life Circle assist their clients with toileting and preventing toileting accidents. They also care for their perineal hygiene and assist clients with special toileting needs or changing diapers. Most importantly, caregivers understand the importance of preserving modesty and privacy while offering care.

Toileting is a very important aspect of professional caregiving. At Life Circle, we understand that it is an area that requires sensitivity and thorough training. We also educate our caregivers and ensure that they adopt precautionary measures. This includes wearing latex gloves should they come in contact with bodily fluids, urine or stools. Furthermore, preventing infection is important for a caregiver’s safety.

Caregiving – a gratifying career

Long before Mathura became a professional caregiver, she used to care for her aunt back in her village in Odisha. She assisted her with toileting on a daily basis. Why did she choose to be a caregiver? Mathura chose to be a professional caregiver because she likes to serve people. And she truly understood what the job entails.

Mathura loves her job. She says that her career as a caregiver has enriched her life in many ways. She was touched by the motherly love showered on her by one of her clients. Talking of the lady, she says “My mother passed away when I was a child and she loved me like a mother.”

Mathura was able to help her family cope with financial difficulties. And she is proud of what she has been able to achieve.

Home attendants: The unsung heroes

Caregiving is a noble profession. At Life Circle, we acknowledge that there is a sense of dignity, pride and honour in this work. Therefore, we ensure that our caregivers have their basic needs met and provide safe work environments for them. We also help them learn and grow as they work.

Many families that engage caregivers for their loved ones will agree that without them, life would be tough. And it goes without saying that caregivers are society’s unsung heroes.
